How'd I Get Here?
I'll start with my geographical location. I currently live in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Never in a million years did I think I'd end up here. I mean, I am no big city girl by any means as I've come to find out. I was born and raised in South Carolina...yep, a southern gal I am. But Cleveland? How did that happen? Interesting story behind that....
One day back in 2008 my best friend Vette called me. This was nothing out of the ordinary, but during this particular conversation she wanted to tell me about her new friend Timmy. Timmy was a guy she'd met on a dating website and they'd been getting to know each other better. I thought this was interesting because I'd never thought of joining a dating site myself.
I won't get into the details about Timmy and Vette, but later on in the conversation she suggested I try signing up for a dating site. The idea didn't sound very appealing to me, in fact, it sounded kinda desperate. However, I told her I'd at least try it since I knew she wouldn't quit until I did.
Not long after that conversation, I signed up for a dating site. I didn't expect anything to come out of it, but I promised I would so I did. I signed up for a few sites following that day, but I believe the first was www.afroromance.com (they have since changed their name to interracialdating.com). I wasn't too excited to find out that the site required me to pay to really get anything out of it anyway, so my first attempt at internet dating went nowhere.
Some weeks later I noticed an ad on Facebook for Christian Mingle that I decided, out of boredom, to click on. That was in November and by this time I'd tried a few different sites, talked to quite a few guys, even met two of them in person, and still hadn't changed my mind about finding my future husband online. However, a year later, I still had my Christian Mingle profile even though I had long ago deactivated the ones I had on other sites. During that year, I had been praying and seeking God about various aspects of my life, including who I would eventually marry and where I would meet him. Interestingly enough, I realized that I had the teensiest tiniest inkling that it might be online. That inkling wasn't enough to stop me from deciding to delete my profile one day. I figured that I'd just tricked myself into getting my hopes up since I'd been on the site for so long.
When I logged into my account to delete it, I noticed a picture in my "100% match" list on my homepage. I clicked on it, not because I thought the guy was cute or because I wanted to know who he was, but because the age listed next to the picture was 29 and the guy looked 17. I was thinking there was no way that guy was really 29. I'd had the experience of having many guys under the age of 20 send me messages and claim to be older, but after reading their profiles it was pretty easy to figure out that they were younger. I figured this guy would be no different.
Long story short, the guy really was 29 and I communicated with him right before I deleted my profile. I figured it didn't matter because nothing would come out of this one either...especially since this guy was in Ohio. See where I'm going with this? LOL
Four months later, after many IMs, letters, emails, texts and phone calls, Tim was driving to SC to meet me in April 2010. He arrived late Thursday night and was originally supposed to stay until Tuesday. I'd convinced him a few days before to stay until Friday (that's a long drive, you know ;) ), but when Friday came he didn't want to leave me so he stayed another week. Three weeks later, I spent five days with him in Cleveland, during which time he proposed to me. Two weeks after that he came back to SC for the weekend and we left for OH on the 20th, married in a private civil ceremony with our immediate families present on the 22nd after a 20 day engagement. I went back to SC two days later, but on July 1st, I loaded a Budget truck and drove myself to Cleveland and I've been here ever since. Talk about a whirlwind romance!
