Where is Your Focus?
I woke up Monday morning and my very first thought was that this world is not my home, that everything I see is temporary. It was a great reminder. My family has been experiencing some changes lately and they haven't all been easy to get adjusted to. It is so easy to get caught up in worldly cares and forget that this is not our final destination. Then enemy works very hard to keep our focus off of God, and using our own concerns is a great way to do just that.
I was driving home Monday and noticed the trees along the road. This time of year is so beautiful and with the changing colors of the leaves it makes for a beautiful scene. The scene shows how artistic and appreciative of beauty God is. But even the leaves changing colors has a message. Yes, God creates beauty, but those leaves are changing colors because they're dying. The leaves die, then they lose their color and fall from the trees. It's a demonstration of how nothing in this world will last and everything will eventually fade away...just like the bible says it will.
Isaiah 26:3 tells us that if we keep our focus on God, He will keep us in perfect peace. It's when we take our attention off of God that we lose our focus, we lose our peace and confusion comes in. It's when we take our focus off of God that we begin to feel overwhelmed and depressed. Isaiah 61:3 says that we have been given the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (which is the spirit that causes depression and sadness). That just means that when we start to feel heavy or sad or overwhelmed or whatever, if we begin to praise God in that very moment it will take our attention off of whatever is depressing us and put our focus back where it belongs...on God, who is greater than our issues.
We cannot allow the enemy of our souls to distract us from God. Jesus will soon come back for those who made Him their Savior and then the world as we know it will fade away. Your time is precious, but the enemy wants you to waste it worrying about things that are not important, the things that have to do with this world. Yes, we live in the world and there are things we have to take care of, like our homes and our families, our jobs....but these things are never supposed to take the place of God. God should always be our focus. We should work, play, serve, etc to the glory of God. That means that we represent Him in everything that we do and we do everything as if we are doing it for Him. If the things we do don't represent God, we're wasting our time on those things. If you are in a relationship that isn't showing the world what God is like, you are wasting your time on that relationship. If your work is not bringing attention to the God in you, or if it's keeping you from God altogether then you should consider making changes. The main thing is that you want to keep God as the center of your life and ask for His guidance in everything that you do so that you are always certain that you are doing exactly what He wants you to be doing. Don't allow the enemy to steal your precious time and to convince you that this life and it's troubles are all there is. One day this life will be over and our spirits will continue on in eternity. But where will you be in eternity? Will you be with your Father in Heaven because you stayed focused, or will you allow the enemy to steal your eternity by distracting you and keeping you from God?
